>Is there a success formula for a game to occupy a special place in our hearts? If so, who gives it a form?
A clever game design acts as the blueprint for any game and a game designer is a person who brings every idea to life.
>Every element in a game is a conscious choice put in by the game designer or anyone on the team.
A game designer brings the initial idea of the game to the table and develops the narrative, gameplay, and every element of the game.
A typical day of a game designer involves a lot of brainstorming, ideation, prototyping concepts, refining elements, and most importantly playing games!
So where does one start?
The Asian Institute of Design has recently introduced a comprehensive game design program.
The advanced one-year diploma program is designed and developed by industry experts who have been a part of various projects. The student-oriented curriculum, mentorship by industry professionals, and the opportunity to work on real-time projects make it the perfect job-oriented program.
>This was launched by the industry experts themselves. Followed by a panel discussion on – “Why India needs to foster better game designers?”, headed by Anand Ramachandran, Product Consultant at Asian Institute of Design with panelists – Bhavna Padmanabhan, Creative Director at Game Design Plus, Oliver Jones, Co-founder Bombay Play, Huzaifa Arab, Technical design director at LightFury Games and Sohrab John, Associate Game Designer.
>The discussion echoed one major point among several others – The lack of a comprehensive game design program that prepares aspirants for the job, right from day one. Gaming companies are on the lookout for individuals who know the craft and are formally trained. Formal training enables individuals to understand the basics, and explore how the different ideas, elements, people and inspirations come together!
>Apart from the never-ending love for games, there are certain other skills that a game designer needs to master.
>Starting with analytical thinking
Apart from the freedom to cross the boundaries of imagination a game designer should be able to understand the problem, analyse patterns and come up with solutions.
>Always learning always curious!
If curiosity excites you and you are always ready to learn and unlearn, then you are halfway there. Curiosity and always open to learning new things are something that they need to be wired with.
> Present ideas through words
As someone said long ago, “words have the power to inspire, motivate and change”, Good communication skill is a desirable trait for every game designer. They should be great storytellers and should be able to put their ideas into words.
> Break down the game to anyone
A game is born out of the effort of many. Right from the planning stage to the release date, a game designer should be capable of breaking down the game – its narrative, elements, gameplay and everything and anything related to it to anyone.
> These are all the skills that can be picked up on the way. All it takes is effort, dedication and also direction and our experts at AID are more than happy to help.
> The gaming industry is leaping ahead, creating thousands of opportunities. This is the right time to join the industry if you are aspiring for an exciting career in it. The Asian Institute of Design being the pioneer of gaming education seeks to provide new-age programs that bridge the industry-academia gap.
>The advanced diploma in game design is a program designed by industry experts to meet the growing demand for qualified game designers in the industry. From a good designer to a great one, the path will be filled with creativity and a lot of fun. Want to learn more? Reach out to us.
